Strategic products

Measure the strategy itself, not just the data underneath it.

A strategic product holds a strategy, a policy or a procedure and is assessed in its own right. Executives own it, the data products and processes that deliver it are linked to it, and its score shows how well the strategy works in practice.

Four kinds

Every strategy an executive answers for can be a strategic product.

Global data strategy

Chief data officer

The organisation’s data strategy: objectives, KPIs, sponsor and funding. Every domain’s data products roll up to it.

DCAM · CMMI DMM · CDMC

Critical data element strategy

Chief risk officer · chief data officer

The policy for the elements that feed risk and regulatory reporting: definitions, owners, quality thresholds and lineage.

BCBS 239 · ECB RDARR · DCAM

Commercial strategy

Chief commercial officer

A growth, pricing or customer strategy, with the data products and commercial processes that make it possible.

Objectives · KPIs · CRM evidence

Process strategy

Chief operating officer

Procedures such as order-to-cash or customer onboarding, assessed with process controls: an owner, KPIs and evidence from CRM and service management.

Process controls · Basel III · AMLD6 · MiFID II · PSD2 where regulated

How the score rolls up

The strategy’s score is earned by the products that deliver it.

A strategic product is assessed on its own controls and on its children. When it sits below the threshold, the executive sees which child holds it back.

How a strategy is assessed

Written once, measured continuously.

Its own controls

Objectives, KPIs, sponsor and funding for a strategy; coverage and adoption for a policy; adherence for a procedure.

Its children

The data products, critical data elements and processes linked to it, each with its own data maturity score and evidence.

The gap, named

Below the threshold, the strategy shows the child that holds it back, its owner and the next action.

Owned by an executive

The executive is the accountable role; domain leads and process owners are responsible for the children.
